Comparing Small Numbers for Class 1
Hello, students! Today, we are going to learn about comparing small numbers. This is an important skill because it helps us understand which numbers are bigger, smaller, or the same. Let's start!
When we compare numbers, we look at two numbers and decide if one is more (bigger), less (smaller), or equal (the same) as the other.
Steps for Comparing Numbers:
1. **Understanding More and Less:**
- When one number is bigger than another number, we say it is "more."
- When one number is smaller than another number, we say it is "less."
2. **Using Objects to Compare:**
- Let's use objects like apples to understand better.
**Example:**
Imagine you have two groups of apples:
- Group 1 has 3 apples.
- Group 2 has 5 apples.
Which group has more apples?
- Group 2 has more apples because 5 is more than 3.
Which group has fewer apples?
- Group 1 has fewer apples because 3 is less than 5.
3. **Comparing Numbers Directly:**
- Let's compare numbers directly without using objects.
**Example:**
Compare 4 and 7:
- 7 is more than 4.
- 4 is less than 7.
Compare 6 and 2:
- 6 is more than 2.
- 2 is less than 6.
4. **Using Symbols:**
- We use special symbols to show comparisons:
- ">" means greater than (more)
- "<" means less than (less)
- "=" means equal to (the same)
**Example:**
4 < 7 means 4 is less than 7.
6 > 2 means 6 is greater than 2.
5 = 5 means 5 is equal to 5.
Activities and Practice:
1. **Comparing Objects:**
- Take two sets of toys and compare which set has more toys.
2. **Comparing Numbers:**
- Look at two numbers and decide which is more, which is less, or if they are equal.
Worksheet:
Compare the following numbers and use the correct symbol (>, <, =):
1. 3 __ 5
2. 7 __ 4
3. 6 __ 6
